We were a bit late, but the sheep are finally lambing and the goats kidding.  We are busy getting ready for spring, starting plants, etc.  Our seeds from High Mowing Organic should be available soon.

The 2008 Farm Bill required the Congress to issue rules addressing anti-competitive trade practices in the livestock and poultry industries.  The proposed Fair Farm Rules (GIPSA) have yet to be finalized and implemented due to the opposition of corporate agribusinesses.  On Thursday, November 3rd there was a rally at Lehigh University and one in Philadelphia in an attempt to bring attention to this issue.  I attended the rally in Philadelphia and also hoped to speak with Sen. Casey.  He did not attend the meeting so we had to speak to his representatives.  As a small livestock farmer I felt it was important to have my voice heard and was glad to have the experience.  If you support small farms, contact Sen. Casey's office and urge him to back the implementation of GIPSA.

We were very fortunate with these past few storms.  We have not lost power and had minimal damage.  What a way to end the season.  Effective November 1st, we will be open only on the weekends.

They are slow, but the tomatoes are coming in.  We have red, yello, pink, cherry, and sauce types.  The heirlooms are not doing as well.  Hot peppers are turning color, including the ghost peppers.

Well, we survived.  Thank you to my customers for understanding why we closed for the day.  We lost branches and a tree fell across the road, so driving conditions weren't the best.  I must admit, tho, I don't understand people.  The downed tree is(was) laying across active (hot) power lines and despite cones blocking the way, people drove UNDERNEATH rather than detour.  Well, we are safe and still have our electric.

On Sunday there is the potential for this area to be effected by Hurricane Irene.  Do to the possibility of strong winds and even stronger gusts I feel, for the safety of my customers, it will be in my best interest to not open.  If the storm changes its course and misses us, I will maintain my Sunday hours.  I'll keep you posted.

Sweet corn is in, again.  We are now picking our specialty melons, cantelope, and water melons.  We have managed to stay ahead of the fruit thieves for now so we have yellow and white peaches.  Check out the BFBL-GLV website for info about the Buy Fresh Challenge and Taste of the Valley event at the Melt.  We will also be showing a movie here at the farm on Sept. 17th at 7pm.  More details to follow.
